Prostitute

Prostitute.  Stitched words:  Sex for $.  Xylene photo transfer on tea-stained muslin.  Hand stitched and beaded.  25" x 19" unframed; 31" x 25" framed.

"Jeannette Angell is a novelist, playwright, short story writer and poet. She is a member of the National Writer's Union, the Author's Guild, and the Dramatists' Guild. Jeannette is a founding member of the prestigious Commercial Street Writers Workshop."  These are the words found on her website (http://www.jeannetteangell.com)...where there are links to her award winning works.  Jeannette is also a former prostitute.  She's written about it.  Callgirl is available in hardcover from Permanent Press and in paperback from Harper Collins Perennial Currents.

I'm not about to write about Jeannette's decision.  She's already done it; buy the book!  For the Decision Portrait Series and me the decision is simply stitched in a straightforward, non-apologetic, honest way.  The decision will confront exhibition viewers and hopefully "challenge their prejudices and assumptions” in exactly the way Jeannette's book "is meant to challenge the prejudices and assumptions that people make about the sex industry in general, and sex workers in particular".
